Calanova Golf Club Urb. Calanova Golf Finca Cortijo Colorado La Cala de Mijas Malaga www.calanovagolfclub.com | Designed by Julián Garcia-Mayoral, and opened as recently as 1st May 2006, this course is the latest addition to the ever growing ranks of Aymerich managed golf courses. The course itself is one of the newest on the coast and has been constructed to meet USGA regulations regarding tees, bunkers, drainage and of course the greens. Situated in the heart of the ‘Mijas Golf Valley’, Calanova Golf is sure to develop into a gem under the careful guidance of Aymerich Golf Management.
As for the course itself, it is already showing great promise although recent heavy use has taken its toll on the young fairways. A few problems have also arisen with heavy rainfall, resulting in slight movement of some land. Nothing too drastic, but it is noticeable on a couple of holes. I’m sure given time the heavy traffic will slow, the green keepers will do their jobs well, and the course will return to its best.
A good variety of holes offer a stern, but fair, test to all standards of player. Elevated tees and raised greens are a feature of the course, and in parts it has a distinct ‘links’ feel to it. This is mainly due to the open landscape and natural vegetation which covers the surrounding areas. Some holes are tighter than others which obviously demands accuracy from the tee. However, there are plenty of opportunities to attack the flags with shorter clubs should your tee shot be ‘down the middle’. Sneaky gullys in front of the greens, and the elevated greens, can be more than deceptive to the naked eye. Check your distances correctly and you could score well on this course. Some of the greens on this course are huge, with an average area of over 500m! Straight, true and quick they are hard to read, often showing more of a break than is actually there. Could this be due to the lay of the surrounding land? Without care you could end up with more strokes on your card than you would like to mention.
The clubhouse offers more than adequate facilities, temporary as they may be. There is a bar, restaurant and changing facilities, with courteous and friendly Staff always on hand. There is a putting green and driving range, again all temporary and sure to improve given time. The Pro-shop is small, but provides all the essentials and a sensible selection of clothing and accessories.
