What can you say about Valderrama, that has not already been said?  Possibly the most famous course in Europe has played host to numerous prestigious events including-  The Volvo Masters, The American Express Championship and in 1997....The Ryder Cup.

The course was originally known as ‘Sotogrande New’, designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1974.  In 1984 the current owner and president, Jaime Ortiz-Patino, took control.  He invited Trent Jones back and transformed the course into Valderrama as we know it today.  Valderrama officially opened on 1st January 1985.

The course itself it is set amongst a beautiful Cork Oak forest in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja mountain range.  With flat tree lined fairways, leading to elevated greens well protected by bunkers it is to say the least, a challenge.  In the past many words used to describe it such as daring, dramatic and demanding.  When the course is presented on television it always looks immaculate and perfectly manicured.  This is how Valderrama looks twelve months of the year, always perfect!!
 
Valderrama has plenty of tales to tell and many a golfing star will openly admit to the difficulties of this course. Ask Darren Clarke about the seventeenth, which must rank as one of the most famous holes in the world of golf.  During championships, spectators fill the grass bank at the back of the green to watch the pros take this hole on in two.  They love it when a ball goes in the lake!  Again, ask Darren Clarke!  There is the fourth where a pond, a waterfall and a lake protect a green which is difficult to hit anyway.  Every hole is a challenge, and when you reach the putting surface, the greens are quick and will cause problems.

Valderrama truly is beautiful, and thoroughly deserves to be ranked alongside the best courses in golf.  The setting is peaceful, tranquil and understandably the pride and joy of Jaime Ortiz-Patino.

Upon arrival, the clubhouse and facilities on offer will immediately impress you.  Every golfer is greeted, and treated, as though Tiger himself has just pulled up.  After you have negotiated the course, relax and enjoy a drink on the terrace of the Masters Bar and relish in the history surrounding you that is Valderrama. 
If you are lucky enough to get the chance to play Valderrama, take it!  It is a once in a lifetime experience and never to be forgotten!

Don’t leave home without your handicap certificate!! You won’t get on this course without one.
